Compulsory hotel fees are different from airline fees.
We live in polarized times. When the last president talked about getting rid of “junk fees”, he hit one thing, which almost all the Americans agree – the compulsory hotel has been found to go to the resort fee.
The airline charges are annoying, but they are optional for most parts. No one forces passengers to travel with a bag checked. One should not pay to sit on a plane. Some choose to buy food on boards. Yes, there are ADA issues in some cases, and no one wants young children to sit on themselves. But for the most part, it is possible to travel by air without paying additional fees, especially with an advance plan, without paying additional fees at the top of the ticket price.
But hotel resort fees are a different case.
Whatever they are called, the mandatory hotel resort fees are disturbing.
In many cases, resort fees are no longer exclusive to resorts. And hotels recognize the truth that they are the biggest problem by calling them “Amenity fees,” “facility fee,” “destination fee, etc., that these fees are inconsistent and unpredictable. They can include anything.
City hotels deal with destination fees, including gym access to the Internet for bottled water. For example, in Las Vegas, the resort fee is more than $ 50 a night. This includes “boarding pass printing” and “local and toll-free calling”. Of course, if you have a phone, you already have a way to make “local and toll-free call”. Most mobile phone schemes also include long distance domestic calls.
I have recently seen the “Fax Service” included in the resort fee – which anyone remembers what a fax is. If you arrive in a check-in time or leave late, some hotels charge for “storage of your goods”. (Although if your room is available quickly or late, they also charge for it.)
Some resort fees include free cocktails and parking – not others.
Sometimes resort fees involve things that passengers can use – a credit for food and drink, access to waterspole, complimentary reception cocktail, and parking … But what is useful for one passenger may not be helpful for another. And it is almost impossible to know what is involved.
For example, do you believe that parking is included in a resort? sometimes it is. Sometimes, only self-parking involves. Parking is often not included, and gales parking is expensive and mandatory. It pays the gaut parking attendant to know the rules of paying before tossing their keys.
The list is endless, from bottled water to room coffee to spa access. Sometimes there is a discount on hotel restaurants and services. And rapidly, a QR code in the world, it is not always clear what is and it is not included. Just writing this post and searching for information about fees was both time -taking and misleading.
Even as a travel agent, I have only discovered in or later, that I missed out on taking advantage of something involved in the fee, or I thought that I felt the payment for some.
Some guests know what is involved in hotel fees – but every hotel fees seem different.
Additionally, the fact is that the fee can change from the time of booking. While hotel prices are closed for advance booking, additional fees can change. And, their changes are usually no less expensive.
Also, fees are usually not included in the prepaid package. So anyone who predeves a holiday or honeymoon and thinks that they are covering the food can achieve a great surprise. Things such as drinks and perhaps golf or spa services can be billed around $ 400 of additional required fee before purchasing anything.
Hotel workers hate fees for this and other reasons. They rarely lead to the response – “Oh, cool! I get it all for that fee!” Instead, they produce anger, complaints and lower suggestions.
Alternative fees are a different fee (and sometimes non-commercialized).
Now clearly, many alternative housing fees seem perfectly appropriate. Years ago, Hilton Vicoloa offered a voluntary hotel resort fee, including mini-golf, snorkel gear and other water games and spa accesses. And I think most of the passengers are being offered an alternative fee package in check-in, and many people can take advantage of them. The keyword is “optional”.
A final dirty little secret about hotel resort fees:
They are non-discoured and non-commission. This means that passengers with corporate or senior or AAA exempted do not get any break on them. In some cases, preferred travel agents have an arrangement that waies the fees, but usually, the fees are completely different. And as I have explained to customers, while sometimes agents and tour companies are exempted, the most publicly available rates for hotels and resorts are commissions made for both brick-mortar and online agencies.
Some hoteliers who defend the fees say that prices will increase without them. This is probably accurate. But for those passengers who prepare hotels as part of a package, they will not be done with sufficient fees on arrival. And to see all the other hotels, the price of the real room will be known.
For most travelers like us, honesty matters.
