US airlines cancel more than 1,000 flights due to Northeast winter storm warning

Dec 26 (Reuters) – Airlines in the United States canceled or delayed thousands of flights during peak holiday travel on Friday due to severe winter storm warnings, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

A total of 1,139 flights were canceled and 3,808 were delayed as of 12:30 p.m. ET, according to the website.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning this afternoon that will “cause hazardous travel conditions across the northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England to the Great Lakes through Saturday morning.”

Airports in potential impact areas such as John F. Kennedy Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport have also put up posts on the X warning travelers about possible delays or cancellations.

JetBlue Airways canceled 225 flights, the most among carriers, followed by Delta Air Lines with 186 flights, Republic Airways with 155, American Airlines with 96 and United Airlines with 82.

An American Airlines spokesperson told Reuters that the carrier “has issued a travel alert, allowing those whose plans may be affected to rebook without change fees.”

JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, Republic and United Airlines did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
