Qatar Airways forced an 85-year-old vegetarian passenger to eat the equivalent of a non-vegetarian meal, causing her to suffocate to death.

In an unfortunate incident, an 85-year-old passenger on a Qatar Airways flight from the United States died of suffocation after allegedly being asked to eat non-vegetarian food.

According to reports, the elderly passenger was served non-vegetarian food despite pre-ordering a vegetarian option. However, during the flight he was accidentally served a meat-based dish. Upon realizing the mistake, the passenger immediately informed the cabin crew. Instead of changing the meal, the flight attendant reportedly advised him to “eat meat”. Shortly after, the man reportedly began suffocating and collapsed mid-flight. Despite efforts to assist, he could not be revived.

This unfortunate incident has sparked global outrage and a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against the airline.
Following the incident, the passenger’s family has filed a lawsuit against Qatar Airways, accusing the airline of negligence. The complaint alleges that the cabin crew failed to provide adequate medical assistance and did not divert the plane to the nearest airport for emergency care. Legal representatives of the family argue that both food manipulation and lack of timely medical intervention directly contributed to the man’s death.

Qatar Airways response

Qatar Airways has expressed its condolences to the bereaved family and said it is fully cooperating with the authorities in the ongoing investigation. The airline also reiterated its commitment to passenger safety and announced that it was reviewing internal procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This incident underlines the vital importance of airlines adhering to passengers’ dietary preferences, especially for passengers with health or religious restrictions. It also highlights the need for strong medical emergency protocols on long-haul flights. As legal proceedings unfold, the case raises serious concerns about in-flight safety and service accountability – issues that could inspire airlines around the world to strengthen their standards and ensure such tragedies are never repeated.
